  • Tips for Coping with Social Isolation

We are sociable beings that do not thrive in isolation. This is precisely why state prisons punish inmates by placing them in solitary confinement. It causes them intense mental suffering.

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic and subsequent lockdown, many of us have felt like we are being held in solitary confinement during the past few months. And many of us have been experiencing mental suffering as a result of this prolonged solitude.

Who can say how long this may continue? While we have no control over what our governments do, we do have power over ourselves and our worldviews. Here are some suggestions for coping with social isolation, regardless of its duration.

Cut Yourself Off from the Media

If you’re paying attention, it appears like the media is more concerned with causing confusion and alarm than with reporting true news. Stay informed as much as possible, but avoid binge-watching the news. This will help reduce your anxiety levels.

    Be Innovative

Isolation can rapidly lead to extreme boredom, therefore it’s crucial to utilize your time creatively. This could involve painting and rearranging the furnishings in the living room or encouraging your spouse and children to learn a new language with you. It may involve tinkering with an old recipe or creating a game with your children. Just have fun and think creatively!

    Reconnect

Now is an excellent moment to reconnect with long-lost friends and family members. And technologies like Skype and Facetime make it exceedingly simple to communicate with anyone in the world.

    Keep Active

Much of the worry we may have stems from the fact that we are not as physically active as normal. It is essential to maintain physical activity throughout this period. So get outside and catch some sun. Take a stroll or ride your bike. Not only is exercise beneficial for our physical health, but it also releases endorphins that improve our mental and emotional wellbeing.

    Meditate

Currently, the world appears to be a chaotic place filled with noise and hatred from all sides. It is essential to set aside time each day for peaceful meditation.

It’s okay if you’ve never meditated before. Simply try it.

One of the most straightforward methods of meditation is listening meditation. Find a place in your home where you may be alone and comfortable. Close your eyes, take several deep breaths in and out, and listen to the ambient sounds.

What do you perceive? The buzz of a light bulb? A fly? As he scratches, your dog’s collar is rattling down the hallway. Increase your hearing to determine what else you can hear outside the house. Birds? Lawnmowers? Traffic?

Simply breathe and listen intently for 5-10 minutes. When you listen, you can’t think at the same time, and so you will notice finally your thoughts go quiet. This is paradise!

If you find that the social isolation is really beginning to trouble you and you’d like to speak with someone, please get in touch. I would be happy to discuss how I may be able to help.
